Insomniac Games has settled a question that has followed Marvel’s Wolverine since it was first revealed: the PlayStation 5 exclusive will not be an open-world game. Speaking in an interview with IGN, game director Mike Daly said the studio deliberately avoided the sandbox format that defined the developer’s three Marvel’s Spider-Man titles.
“We did not set out to make an open world game or a sandbox game,” Daly said. “What we really wanted was high octane, high intrigue, linear single-player adventure, and the missions reflect that in their structure.”
A deliberate break from the Spider-Man template
The choice sets Marvel’s Wolverine apart from Insomniac’s recent output. Marvel’s Spider-Man, Miles Morales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 all let players swing freely across an open recreation of New York City, a format that helped make the franchise one of Sony’s best-selling PlayStation exclusives in Europe and beyond. Wolverine, by contrast, will move players through distinct, self-contained missions.
According to Daly, that structure is meant to serve the character rather than limit the game. Logan has never anchored a franchise built around defending one city, unlike Spider-Man’s role as New York’s protector. Daly told Eurogamer that the character is defined instead by restlessness, a figure who is constantly being driven forward by duty or unfinished business from his past rather than settling into one place.
“He doesn’t really get anchored into one space and wander around,” Daly said, describing the missions as carrying a comic book rhythm of action and intrigue.
Variety within a fixed path
Insomniac has stressed that linear does not mean uniform. Daly has said the team wanted variety across levels, with some missions built around stealth and traversal and others centred on the brutal, claw-based combat shown during a PlayStation State of Play presentation. Some individual levels will reportedly feel more open than others, even if the overall game does not offer a free-roam map.
The approach also reflects a practical trade-off. A tighter, level-based design is likely to produce a shorter game than the sprawling Spider-Man titles, but Insomniac appears willing to trade scale for pace and narrative focus, betting that fans will value intensity over sheer size.
What it means for European PS5 owners
Marvel’s Wolverine is confirmed for release on PlayStation 5 on 15 September 2026, exclusive to Sony’s console and not available on PS4, according to PlayStation’s own product listings. For European players, who make up a substantial share of the PS5 install base, the game arrives as one of the platform’s most anticipated exclusives of the year, alongside continued interest in whether Sony will bring the title to PC at a later date, as it has done with several previous first-party titles.
The R-rated tone of the project, confirmed by Insomniac since its 2021 reveal, also distinguishes it from the more family-friendly Spider-Man series, positioning Marvel’s Wolverine closer to titles like God of War in its violence and narrative weight rather than as a direct sequel in spirit to Insomniac’s web-slinging catalogue.
